Next on the list of license hierarchy in New Jersey is the Red Seal Stationary Engineer. Again, the responsibilities are greater and offers the ability to work with larger, more sensitive systems.

Description by N.J.A.C 12:90 Code:

Licensed 1-B Red Seal Operators (stationary engineers) are required to facilities over 1,000 HP in a Chief Engineer assignment or operator coverage for facilities in any capacity range.

Responsibilities of Engineer for the license:

Responsibilities vary greatly at this licensed level since this qualifies the operator by state code to operate a standard packaged boiler over 1,000 HP capacity or a power generation facility over 20,000+ HP capacity. Despite the range in the job scope, our operators all have core soft and hard skills that encompass the following capabilities:

  • Boiler Start-up and Shut-Down

  • Operational and Maintenance planning and scheduling.

  • ASME Code Compliance with management of insurance and state inspections.

  • Create and Monitor performance of facility operating procedures.

  • Create, Manage, and Schedule maintenance assignments.

  • Implementing corrective, preventative, and predictive maintenance programs to maintain as much uptime of the facility systems.

  • Control safety procedures and programs to ensure all operating personal are removed from hazardous energy.

  • Analyze Water Chemistry Program Management through testing in makeup water, condensate, deaerator, and boiler testing along with any other accessory systems required to determine the need for adjustments.

  • Equipment labeling and management of system modifications.

  • Weekly, Monthly and Annual Maintenance Tasks per OEM recommendations, industry best practices, and regulatory requirements to 12:90, ASME, and NBIC code.

  • Testing of critical safety devices (interlocks) that ensure safe boiler operation.

  • Inspection and Operation performance of all auxiliary equipment systems

  • Condensate makeup and control to optimize plant performance

  • Adequate fuel consumption for proper energy efficiency

  • Predictive and Preventative Maintenance such as infrared inspections, valve maintenance, pump maintenance, inspections, controlling hazardous energy through LOTO program, and maintaining safety compliance to facility requirements and procedures.

  • Testing backup emergency systems and secondary fuel supplies

  • Monitor vendor support and performance

  • Support Outages including annual insurance/state inspections and extended layups

  • Review of previous log, rounds and facility communication about equipment operational events and reports.

For facilities where the red seal engineer is designated as the Chief Engineer for the facility, The Training Center Group will handle all state compliance and designated an operator for Chief Engineer status.  All required insurance and state paperwork is part of our service.  Additional responsibilities with a designated chief engineer include ASME compliance, boiler repair management, control of hazardous energy, and energy performance for all facility equipment.
